Why Reddit matters for AI visibility
Reddit is one of the most frequently cited sources in AI-generated answers, making it an attractive channel for marketers looking to improve visibility through community discussions and user-generated content.
But Reddit is now cracking down on brands and agencies attempting to manipulate AI search results with fake discussions and promotional comments.
What Reddit has changed
Reddit has just announced a major crackdown on marketers attempting to manipulate AI search results by posting fake discussions and promotional comments on Reddit designed to be picked up by LLMs.
The company is using its own AI-powered moderation systems to detect and remove coordinated GEO-spam, targeting brands and agencies that disguise advertising as authentic user conversations.
In Q1, Reddit’s automated systems detected around 25,000 spammy posts and comments every day, while reducing users’ exposure to spam by 20% year-on-year. Reddit says the increase reflects better detection, not necessarily a surge in spam itself.
What this means for marketers
This is a clear signal that AI search visibility cannot be built on fake engagement.
Instead of trying to seed artificial discussions, brands should focus on signals that are harder to fake and more useful to audiences:
editorial coverage and third-party citations
genuine customer reviews and community discussion
transparent expert participation on platforms like Reddit
owned content that clearly answers customer questions
digital PR, expert commentary and authoritative publisher coverage
Planit's view
This supports Planit’s wider view that AI visibility requires long-term ownership and investment. It is not a system that can be gamed for quick results.
Planit has previously argued, AI discovery is shaped by offsite signals across publishers, forums, reviews, affiliates, PR and community platforms. That means SEO, content, PR, affiliate and marketing leadership need to work together, rather than treating GEO as a standalone SEO task.
How Planit can help
AI search rewards credibility. As platforms get better at detecting synthetic content, sustainable GEO will depend on real authority, trusted sources and authentic brand reputation.
For brands exploring GEO, Planit can help identify where visibility is being shaped, which offsite sources matter most, and how teams can build AI visibility in a way that is credible, measurable and aligned with long-term organic growth.
